Shannon, I went to the border three times in my first 100 days in office, and when I was there, I asked for the real, unvarnished truth. I then contrasted it with my first 100 days. And those executive actions didn’t just create the crisis. I then said in his first 100 days he had 94 executive actions. Act as a magnet to have more and more people here. And he said, ‘I am going to give amnesty to millions,’ those types of things. He halted construction of the border wall. Minutes after coming into office, he stopped all deportations. … Look, I very specifically said this is what President Biden did during his first 100 days. A spokesperson for Britt confirmed to The Associated Press’ Emily Wagster Pettus and The Washington Post’s Glenn Kessler that Romero was the person Britt was referring to.īritt was roundly criticized for her story - from Kessler giving her “four Pinocchios” to “Saturday Night Live” roasting her in a hilarious and scorching cold open.Īnd yet, Britt was vague during an appearance on Sunday’s “Fox News Sunday.” Moderator Shannon Bream asked, “Did you mean to give the impression that this horrible story happened on President Biden’s watch?”īritt said, “No. Katz said if Romero is who Britt was talking about, then the horrific events that Romero experienced happened outside of the U.S. She was at a roundtable discussion at the border last year with Britt and two other senators. President Biden’s border policies are a disgrace.”īritt never gave an exact timeline, but her words seemed to imply this happened during Biden’s time as president.īut former Associated Press reporter Jonathan Katz put out a video on social media, saying Britt was “beyond misleading.” ( Here’s Katz’s TikTok video.) The woman Britt appeared to be talking about is Karla Jacinto Romero, who testified before Congress about being the victim of sex trafficking by Mexican cartels years ago when she was 12. This is the United States of America, and it is past time, in my opinion, that we start acting like it. Britt relayed meeting the woman and said, “We wouldn’t be OK with this happening in a Third World country. Britt told the tale of going to the border and meeting a woman who survived being sex trafficked. Britt also was called out for a story she told during her response. Her speech could easily have been dismissed for being overly dramatic to the point of humor, but there was something more to be picked apart. It also turns out that one of the major points in Britt’s speech was misleading - as discovered by one tenacious reporter. It was a speech that has been widely panned and mocked, including by some in her own party and conservative media. Katie Britt, considered a rising star in the party and maybe even a dark horse to be Donald Trump’s running mate, delivered one of the most memorable State of the Union responses of all time. He was so energetic that Fox News’ Jesse Watters ridiculously said, “This guy is on speed or something.”īut who knew that it would be the Republican response to the State of the Union, usually an afterthought that is quickly forgotten, that would leave a lasting impression.Īlabama junior Sen. Most agree that Biden had a good night, showing the vim and vigor that certainly threw cold water on the narrative that he is this doddering old man incapable of running the country. Last Thursday was President Joe Biden’s big State of the Union address.
